Finance, Money and Benefits for Carers

Having the right information and advice about what benefits or tax credits you might be entitled to can make a huge difference.

There is a range of benefits, tax credits and other financial support that you may be able to receive as a carer:

Carer’s Allowance

If you are looking after someone for 35 hours a week or more, you may be eligible for Carers Allowance. Carer's Allowance is taxable. It can also affect your other benefits.

Carer's Credit

If you're caring for someone for at least 20 hours a week, and are over 16 years of age and under State Pension age. Carer's Credit is a National Insurance credit which helps build your entitlement to the basic State Pension and additional State Pension.

What should I do if I think that the person I look after is losing the ability to make decisions or manage their financial affairs?

The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) protects your money, health and welfare, if you can't make all your own decisions.

Carers Gloucestershire employs locality based carers advisers who can give free individual help. You can contact them on Carersline: Telephone 0300 111 9000 or visit their website.

Citizens Advice also offers free, impartial advice. Go to their website to find the nearest bureau.
